RSS Feeds & Analytics - Getting Set Up

by Caroline Middlebrook

What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it is a way of allowing your blog visitors to have your blog posts automatically delivered using a method of their choice rather than having to manually visit your web page every day to check for updates. This is particularly helpful when somebody reads many blogs as they can use a tool called an RSS reader to read all of those blogs in one place.

Each separate blog will publish a unique URL, this is the RSS feed and is what any visitors will need to use to subscribe to the blog via RSS. All of the blog platforms, including WordPress, have RSS technology built in already which is great as this means that there is very little that you need to do to set it up. The chances are, in fact, that if you’ve already chosen the theme to use, you won’t have to do anything at all.

What you need to look out for is that the RSS icon is displayed prominently in the upper section of your blog theme. If your visitor has to scroll down to find it, use a different one. Ensure that the icon is relatively big and stands out. Basically, you need to make sure that it will draw the visitor’s eye straight to it. If it’s out of sight, it’s unlikely that it will be used.

Full or Partial Feeds - Which to Choose?

There is an RSS feature that will send just a small piece of the published post to the RSS feed, and if the reader would like to view the whole post, they have to click to follow it through to your web page to read it. Be aware though that WordPress is set, by default, to publish a full feed, so your whole post will be sent via the feed. You can see, and amend, this setting by going to your WordPress Dashboard, then go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Reading’.

There are pros and cons to both full and partial feeds. If you allow the RSS feed to publish the whole post, your reader won’t need to visit your web page any more - they are able to access all your posts straight from their feed reader. You may find this doesn’t suit you as it does mean that your readers aren’t going to see the ads on your site. However, this has now changed since Google set up a way of allowing ads to be embedded into your feed directly.

Now there is something to understand about RSS readers - these are people who understand the Internet, they know what RSS is, they have chosen their RSS reader, they have decided to subscribe to your feed because they want to hear what you have to say and so they are far less likely to click on an ad than somebody who arrived at your website from a search engine. Also, these people are hungry for information which is why they are using RSS in the first place.

Using their RSS reader means that they can read all the blogs that they have subscribed to swiftly without having to visit lots of different websites. This creates the down side to only publishing a partial feed as these people are much less likely to bother to follow the link to your website to read the whole post. A lot of these readers will probably even unsubscribe and so your posts will not get viewed at all.

It is my recommendation that to grow a social blog and to build a loyal audience that are going to read absolutely everything you ever write, you must make the feed a full one. On the other hand for a heavily monetized and commercial blog that does not require such a large readership, a partial feed would be better.

On-page ads, however, are not the only revenue that can be generated by your blog. When you have learned how to utilise your blog to create much greater revenue streams, it will not matter whether your readers follow your posts on your website or via an RSS feeder. With this in mind, a full feed would be my recommendation.

Utilizing a Feedburner

If you use the WordPress theme unchanged then there is nothing you need to do in order to allow people to subscribe to your feed but you have no way of knowing how many people have subscribed. If you care about your subscriber number and want to be able to track it then the Feedburner service is for you.

The Feedburner service is completely free and is run by Google. It is also incredibly easy to set up. All you need to do once you are signed up, is give your original blog’s URL to Feedburner and it will create a new Feedburner URL for you to use. You can then edit your WordPress theme to use the Feedburner URL instead.

Google Analytics - What is it?

Google Analytics is a nice piece of software that allows you to track all kinds of stats about your website such as how much traffic you have had, what keywords are used to find you, other links that point to you, the location of your visitors and a lot more. It’s damn good software and it’s completely free!

Once you have signed up you will need to add a website profile for your blog. All you need to do here is put in the URL of your blog and perhaps set your time zone if you want. You will then be shown some code that you need to display on your pages - just click on the code to copy it to the clipboard.

To put the code onto your WordPress blog, you can do it manually but that involves editing your theme files and if you change themes you will have to do it again. Instead, I recommend Semiologic which manages your Analytics for you. The download page has full instructions on how to use the plugin so I don’t need to repeat it here.

Pay Per Click Advertising For Internet Marketers: An Introduction

by Joseph Summers

In the marketing and advertising world, there are three words which take precedence over all else: return on investment. Gaining the maximum possible return on investment in advertising is almost invariably the goal of a well planned campaign and advertising agencies live or die on the ROI they are able to achieve for their clientele.

As an internet marketer, your success also depends largely on your ability to make the most of your marketing budget; and there is no form of advertising online or off which yields a better return on investment than pay per click (or PPC for short) advertising.

Pay per click ads are something you probably see every day ” for instance, the text ads displayed alongside the search results returned by Google and other search engines. These ads can be narrowly targeted and are easy to monitor and track, along with one other feature which makes them the most cost effective type of advertising yet developed. This feature is spelled out in the name of the format: pay per click.

In the PPC world, you want to qualify your viewers as having a very high probability of being buyers BEFORE they click through - before you pay for their click. If you run an ad campaign that results in a low Click-Through-Rate (CTR), you have lost nothing. You got no results, but you paid nothing either. However, if you run a campaign with a high CTR but few conversions, you just incurred a big bill from your vendor such as Google AdWords, but achieved no sales.

Pay per click advertising is a contextual advertising model; the ads displayed alongside search results are chosen based on the keywords that the user has searched for. For example, suppose that you have a garden supply store. You can specify the keywords used in your PPC ads; lets say you’ve chosen flowerpots here. When someone searches for this term, your ad will be displayed ” this is a very important feature of contextual advertising; your ads are displayed only to people who already have an interest in the product or service you provide.

Your PPC campaigns can also be Geo-targeted. This means that you can set them to display only to people in a certain location. Using the garden supply store example again, lets say that you’re located in Chicago and only want your ads to appear to people located in the city ” when users from Chicago search for flowerpots (or whatever keywords you’ve specified) your ads will be displayed, ensuring that your most likely customers are the only people who see your ads.

One of the biggest advantages of using PPC advertising is that you can easily monitor and track their results and fine tune your campaigns on the fly; something which is impossible to do with traditional media formats.

Do You Know What Takes To Be Successful Entrepreneur?

by John Desmond

Have you imagined what it would be like to set your hours, fire your boss and be free of the office politics? Bask in the glory you can imagine from being a smashing success and rolling in the dough!

Reality check! Before you are off picking out your Malibu estate, you should ask yourself a very important question. Are you made to be an entrepreneur? Is it really in you to become wealthy?

To find out the truth rate yourself on the character traits listed here. Would you:

-Stay with something without instant gratification? Your first day of entrepreneurship will be the most exhilarating day of your life. In fact, you probably will not come off cloud nine for many days if not weeks.

Then reality sinks in and you are working just as many hours as you did for your boss simply trying to keep the business afloat and there is no excitement left. Perhaps the worst part of all is the fact that you are not seeing anything in the way of results. That means there is very little to motivate you and move your business forward.

So again, I ask you: Is it possible for you to stay with something without instant rewards? If you answered yes, it is possible that entrepreneurship will be just the ticket for you.

-Let go of a bad concept? Trust me nothing is worse than having to walk away from your baby, if you will. This is a part of you something you have spent a lot of time on.

No one is perfect and before you know it you can be neck deep in a bad concept that threatens the very life of your business. Is it in you to let go and move on to the next idea in spite of your emotional attachment to the plan? Do this part well and you are on your way to being a good entrepreneur.

-Have self-confidence and assurance in your own abilities? Many people will doubt what you are trying to do; in fact, some may even ridicule you. When you let their opinion affect you the battle is already lost.

If you have confidence in your capabilities and your proposal then you might have the stuff to be an entrepreneur.

-Have knowledge of the value of your products and service? A beginners biggest problem is knowing how to price their product or service. You will find them working hundreds of hours for peanuts. This occurs most frequently because of the value they put on the product or service they offer. If you tell yourself you would never pay x amount of dollars for something you are bound to price it too low to stay in business.

The thing you must keep in mind is that you are not the market nor are you the customer. If you have something good to offer your customers that adds value or convenience to their lives then you should earn accordingly. Do not worry if your prices are too high they will tell you about it.

Value the solutions you provide until you hear otherwise. You may be a good entrepreneur when you get this part down pat.

-Fix a Dilemma? This is the most important characteristic of all, are you the one to solve a problem?

When you are an entrepreneur problem solving must be your forte. The proverbial buck must stop with you in this business. There is no higher-level officer to do it for you. It will be all on your shoulders to find the problem and then solve it.

The main reason you have to be a problem solver is to stay in business and make a killing! Trust me if you can spot a problem in the lives of people and then solve it they will pay dearly for the answer. When you have successfully accomplished this you are a good entrepreneur.

Turn Articles Into Press Releases In The Age Of SEO

by Kathleen DiazJoseph Summers

The press release is a format which is most strongly associated with traditional media formats such as newspapers, radio and television. However, press releases have found new life and new purpose on the World Wide Web. If you’re in the internet marketing business (or really, any business, since the emergence of the web as a marketplace has made almost every business owner an internet marketer by necessity), writing press releases for the web can build backlinks to your site, generate traffic and of course, lead to coverage in traditional media and by websites which cover your industry.

You can get started with this by first writing and submitting an article to one of the article directories. Then you can re purpose that article into a press release by simply turning it into an announcement. Answer the who, what, where, when, why, and how questions and make it sound exciting. I like to think of it as a kindergarten student coming home from the first day of school and giving his family a detailed account of exactly what went on at school that day. If you can incorporate the excitement of what you are announcing into your press release, it will bring you lots of interest from the media and others on the internet.

First, there’s the formatting. The service that you use to circulate your press release may have their own guidelines. Follow them. If not, here’s some things to remember.

The first line of your press release also needs to capture the reader’s interest. You have a very short amount of time to engage the reader, so make the most of this. If your headline and the first line of the body are strong enough to make them want to read further, you’re halfway there.

Traditional journalists are now searching the internet for information to include in their stories. The press release services will help you to get media exposure by releasing your story to Google and Yahoo News, allowing journalists and editors to receive your story quickly. Even the Wall Street Journal has stated that at least 75% of its contents come originally from press releases.

When your press released is syndicated in this way, your news story can be instantly seen by tens of thousands of people who are searching for your topic. Even though they have never heard of you before, they will now have your name, website address, and phone number. Many of these people can easily be turned into prospects and clients.

Sending out press releases improves your web site traffic because news sites and press release distribution sites are considered to be credible sources of information. Also, the links from those sites to your site in the news coverage or news releases count highly in making your site more likely to show up on earlier pages of search engine results. Over time, the use of news release distribution helps all the pages of your website rise in the search engine rankings, increasing your overall volume of traffic.

The end of the press release is the important information. Provide current contact information for the person who can answer any question about the material in the press release.

Incorporating press release into your online business plan will make a huge difference in your business, and it will all begin with writing an article.

Digital Camera Pixels

by Scott Paul

ISO sensitivity, white balance, and exposure compensation can be changed in the camera’s menu system. Like most point-and-shoots, the Coolpix S6 lacks a true manual focus mode, but a specific focus zone can be manually selected with the wheel. ISO 2000 enables the ability of faster shutter speed when shooting in low light or to capture fast moving subjects. And Nikon’s original BSS (Best Shot Selector) function automatically takes a series of successive frames and that have the highest concentration.

Canon touts its smaller, lighter body as well; it’s nearly as small as you can get in a digital SLR. But while that might appeal to the small handed and nimble, the XT’s compressed, lightweight, and slightly chintzy-feeling frame will be a hindrance to others who prefer a solid grip and a balanced camera body–particularly if they’re using a lens any heavier than the mediocre 18mm-to-55mm f/3.5-to-f/5.6 unit included in the kit.

Photographers can customize and store up to nine customized options in the D300 and export up to 99 to a CF memory card, enabling photographers to share settings among multiple cameras that feature Picture Control System. Photographers handling the camera will immediately notice its large, bright viewfinder with 0.94x magnification that ensures the clearest view possible for precise composition.

Autofocus can be continuous when the LCD is on or single autofocus is activated by a half press of the shutter release. Focusing can also be performed manually in which case the distance is indicated on both LCDs and can be visually confirmed on the color LCD with the peaking function. Auto focus gets me frustrated at times. It is also a bit heavy after a long day.

Photographers can even maintain full output control of each group of speedlights from the D200’s built-in speedlight. This technology can potentially distill an entire portrait lighting system into a small set of multiple SB800, SB600 or SB-R200 speedlights. Photography is used not only for image registration. This is also a good aid in learning physics, but the company doesn’t accept this good educational aim; in contrast, they confuse consumers this way. Internet Specialist - Three Reasons You Might Need One

by Mark M. Ramos

Do you remember the early days of the internet when one could only believe bookworms and professors were the only ones capable of using the internet with no possibility of normal people understanding it? Really hard to fathom what one was thinking about in those days. Today there are individuals who call themselves internet specialists if they find themselves on the first page of a search result for non competitive search terms!

Think of the many ways that one can harness the power of the World-Wide-Web. It seems that when it comes to cyber space, there are no limitations or boundaries. Just think about it for a second, the majority of the world takes advantage of this technology in a variety of different ways. Whether signing up for an online bank account, grabbing a free email address, or merely just surfing the web, the internet continues to offer more and more.

Nowadays there are many people who even take their businesses online. Of course major corporations pull in gargantuan profits, but you would be surprised on how many people working from home rake in the cash. With simply a PC or Mac at your side you can accomplish virtually anything one desires. From simply creating your own website to internet marketing online, these are just examples of why it’s time to take advantage of cyberspace if you already haven’t. This is the contemporary vehicle to cash.

With the possibilities comes the pitfalls, so don’t think it’s all about stuffing your pockets with cash! You have to get educated even if you don’t personally plan to implement the techniques yourself. The internet is full of very good information and you can learn a lot from what’s available freely but be aware that there are few reasons you probably should seek the advice of a professional. An internet specialist can help with this. Here are 3 reasons you shouldn’t go this alone:

1. The Many Techniques To Learn

If this sounds all new to you, soon you will quickly learn that there are many things to do when running a successful online business such as putting up a website, setting up a merchant account to the different ways of driving traffic to your new site including PPC (Pay Per Click), SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and social media. An experienced webmaster would also recognize that with the hundreds of techniques available to implement, it can get overwhelming to decide. Which one will you choose? An internet specialist can quickly determine which is the best for your business.

2. Keeping Updated On The Latest And Greatest

As stated in an earlier paragraph, there are so many things to consider when running a business online. Even in the rare case you have the mastery of all it takes to run a successful business, keeping updated on what is the new technique and how one can implement it in one’s business is a full time job. The assistance of an internet specialist would relieve you of this burden.

3. Time

The single most important reason of all. Time is a commodity that everyone on the planet has equal shares of. The wealthiest people in the world can’t buy extra time so how do they accomplish everything? The are very efficient in managing their time and even if they felt their own work would be superior, using an employee gives them more time freedom to do what they want. Running an efficient business will open up many more possibilities.

Striving to expand your current business or is this literally the first time you’ve considered going online? Maybe it’s time you considered the services of professional internet specialists so one can greatly improve one’s results. No matter if you incorporate the use of a specialist or not, you should understand the importance of getting your product and/or service seen by all who need it…so what are you doing about it?
